As part of the inspection industry's continuous improvement efforts, the International Federation of Inspection Agencies, Americas Committee (IFIA AC) began a petroleum inspector certification program on April 2, 1998. To meet the requirements to become a certified inspector, inspectors must complete a training record book and pass a 100-question examination with a score of 75 or better.
Examinations are held at various locations in the Americas. In 2001, the Americas Committee translated its materials into Spanish and held its first exam outside of the U.S. in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. In 2009, the IFIA AC expanded the program further into Central and South America, offering the exam in Portuguese in Brazil.
All examinations are proctored and graded by an independent third party. Successful applicants receive a certificate to document their achievement. Certification lasts 5 years. A training record book is not required to be presented when pursuing successive certifications.
